Our mission is to empower
our residents to maximize their own potential, strengthen individual
and family functioning that will lead to self-sufficiency for future
generations.
According to the Department
of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) a family is self-sufficient
when:
1. The head of household
has obtained employment and
2. All family members are free of cash assistance for 12 months,
or
3. 30% of the monthly adjusted income meets or exceeds the fair
market rental rate for their current unit
Case Management
Case management services focus on helping residents to identify personal
assets, barriers to employment or job retention, goals, and desired
outcomes for your families. These services also enable residents to
secure employment, meet lease obligations, homeownership goals and
ultimately self-sufficiency. Working with a MHA case manager, you
will develop an individualized plan, determine your employment preparation
and job readiness needs, access educational resources and other social
services that will lead to less dependence on public assistance.
Money Management Training
Money Management Training Workshops are offered every 3 months based
on enrollment. The training enables residents to gain skills that
will improve their ability to manage their finances. MomentiveTM Consumer
Credit Counseling Service professionals work with MHA residents and
their creditors to set up a repayment plan and extend the time for
debt repayment. Counselors also help you to set up a money management
plan, so that the family budget is handled more effectively. You can
also access online budget and credit counseling.
Life Skills
Training
Muncie Housing Authority case management staff provides STEPS (Steps
to Economic and Personal Success) Guide to Employment /Life Skills
Training. As certified Pacific Institute facilitators of the multimedia
educational platform, they help residents to learn practical skills
needed to get a job, and the effective thinking skills it takes to
keep a job, skills that have proven to be difficult to teach: Effective
decision-making, Internal motivation, Perseverance and resiliency
and Invulnerability to stress and depression. The backbone of the
STEPS education is its thorough understanding of why we think the
way we do. STEPS Training provides the tools to change old thought
patterns, moving even chronically unemployed residents from dependency
to self-sufficiency.
Homeownership
Counseling
Homeownership counseling is available for residents who are interested
in one day owning their own home. Our partnership with the Muncie
Homeownership and Development Center program enables us to offer counseling
and education about housing, housing referrals, financial assistance
with the home purchase, individual development accounts, affordable
housing construction, money-management education, and credit reports
for prospective homebuyers. There is an $18.00 fee for the credit
report. All other services are free.
